Fishing in Valdez

Anglers visiting the Valdez area are sure to be pleased with the wide variety of fishing excursions available to them departing daily from the town’s small boat harbor. From reeling in giant halibut to fighting an Alaska silver salmon, there’s something for fishermen of every level. Relaxing opportunities for fresh water fishing are also available.

Prince William Sound is a premier fishing destination. Open year-round, our waters are home to all species of salmon, rockfish, lingcod, and some of the most accessible halibut in Alaska.
You can drop a line from shore, take your own boat, rent a boat, or take a fishing charter into deeper seas, or obtain charter services. Either way, you’re likely to catch enough fish to eat for dinner, or fill your freezer.

Valdez is also home to the Valdez Fish Derbies, the oldest fish derbies in the state of Alaska.

Fishing Charters

Most charters charge per person and include tackle, bait and cleaning your catch. Half-day and full-day trips are available. Trips will last from 5 to 12 hours depending on where you are fishing, what species you are fishing for, whether everyone limits out early, and of course the weather. Remember, Alaska's weather is unpredictable and could force alternate plans.Be sure to ask what is included in the price of your trip.

Fishing Licenses & Regulations

Make sure you have your fishing license before you go! A state fishing license is is required for anyone over 16 years of age. One day, three-day, 7 day, and 14 day and season licenses are available at our local fishing license vendors.
For fishing regulations, see the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Sport Fishing Regulations Summary as well as the Prince William Sound Supplement. Physical copies of these regulations are available for free at the Valdez Visitors Center
